Yari-ika 槍烏賊

Spear squid have very thick nerve fibres and giant synapses, and are used as model organisms in biology.

Together with bigfin reef squid and swordtip squid, the spear squid is counted among the three great premium squid. It has a gentle sweetness and a moist, supple texture that is delicious.

It reaches edible size only after December, so it appears on the market in winter. This is not unique to spear squid, but squid generally die after spawning, so their lifespan is about a year. A very fleeting life.
