Natto-maki 納豆巻
Natto roll
Born in Morioka
The natto roll is a kind of rolled sushi. In 1963, San-zushi Sohonten in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, is said to have devised the natto roll so that sushi, still a luxury back then, could be offered to ordinary people too. That restaurant is apparently still open in Morioka today.
Like the cucumber roll and kanpyo, it is not a topping from the sea, but natto is a soul food for the Japanese. It is very tasty with vinegared rice, and is a dish you will want to slip in when you fancy a change of pace.
